Michael Shugarman

Michael was born and raised in Edmonton, then moved throughout eastern Canada and Europe for 10 years. He returned to Calgary over 30 years ago to build pursue his own Practice. He now resides in Canmore Alberta.

ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT

As founding Principal of Shugarman Architecture and Design Inc over 30 years ago, Michael oversees a growing range of master planning, hotel, residential, and commercial projects. Michael acted as Coordinating Master Planning and Design Architect for Rogers Place and the Edmonton ICE District, participating in an executive development group for over 10 years of complex city-building initiatives. His practice has recently taken an ever-increasing role in both city-building efforts and building community and economic development opportunities in First Nations communities.

He is a current member of the Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia Associations of Architects and a member of the Urban Land Institute, Interior Designers of Canada, and the American Association of Furniture Designers. Michael holds degrees in Bachelors of Environmental Design, Masters in Architecture, and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.

Before arriving in Calgary, Michael worked in London, England for Building Design Partnership. After completing his Masters in Architecture, Michael worked in Seville, Spain, followed by one year in the studio of Antonio Citterio in Milan, Italy, a recognized world leader in architecture, interior, furniture, and product design. Michael was awarded an Italian Government Bursary for Post-Masters independent research in master planning and urban design. 

Commensurate with this diversity of experience, Michael sits on boards in both the for profit and non-profit sectors including First Nations Economic Development, Community Performing Arts, and Industrial Metals Supply and Fabrication.

 Michael continues to lead a practice recognized through publication, awards, and many long-term client relationships. He has blended a wide range of competencies and experience in the fields of business, design, and master planning with his passion for history, people, and places.

Michael listens, build relationships, and crafts innovative solutions that are tailored to a particular time, place, and agency.
