ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT
As founding Principal of Shugarman Architecture and Design Inc over 30 years ago, Michael oversees a growing range of master planning, hotel, residential, and commercial projects. Michael acted as Coordinating Master Planning and Design Architect for Rogers Place and the Edmonton ICE District, participating in an executive development group for over 10 years of complex city-building initiatives. His practice has recently taken an ever-increasing role in both city-building efforts and building community and economic development opportunities in First Nations communities.
Six years ago, Michael co-founded Sage Development Advisory to serve First Nation and Métis communities.
Michael decided to leverage his decades of experience in mixed-use place-making, consultant design coordination, and strategic business leadership by offering advisory services to communities with limited internal capacity and experience.
Michael’s sincerity of intent to help, his willingness to listen, and his honed communication skills and strategic perspectives underpin Sage’s growing success in forging meaningful partnerships where community benefit is mutually created.
Commensurate with this diversity of experience, Michael sits on boards in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors including First Nations Economic Development, Community Performing Arts, and Industrial Metals Supply and Fabrication.
Michael continues to lead a practice recognized through publication, awards, and many long-term client relationships. He has blended a wide range of competencies and experience in the fields of business, design, and master-planning with his passion for history, people, and places.
